likely

likely (adj,  adv)   =   “น่าจะเป็นไปได้” หรือ “มีแนวโน้ม”


1. คำว่า likely สามารถใช้เป็นได้ทั้ง adjective (คำคุณศัพท์) และ adverb (คำวิเศษณ์) ครับ โดยคำทั้งสองประเภทนี้ให้ความหมายว่า “น่าจะเป็นไปได้” หรือ “มีแนวโน้ม” ครับ และในกรณีของ adverb บ่อยครั้งเราจะพบว่าชอบใช้ร่วมกับ adverb อื่นอย่าง very, most, quite เป็นต้น ครับ เช่น:
– The students are speculating about the likely contents of the exam. (likely เป็น adjective)
– Rain is unlikely today. (unlikely เป็น adjective)
– The illness was likely caused by bacteria. (likely เป็น adverb)
– They will very likely ask you to come again tomorrow. (likely เป็น adverb)

2. นอกเหนือจากที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นแล้ว เราสามารถใช้ likely ในโครงสร้าง it + is + (un)likely + that-clause (อนุประโยคที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยคำว่า that) ได้ครับ เช่น:
– The police believed it was likely that the thieves had already left the area.
– It is unlikely that the ceremony will finish before noon.

3. นอกจากนี้ เรามักจะตามโครงสร้าง be + (un)likely ด้วย to-infinitive (base form of verb ที่มีคำว่า to นำหน้า) ครับ เช่น:
– Is she likely to be very busy tomorrow?
– The delayed train is unlikely to arrive by tonight.
